1. The Infernal Etymology
The Name Represented Someone From Below
It’s no coincidence that Tieflings were cleverly named to represent creatures from the lower planes. Game designer Wolfgang Baur brilliantly combined the German word “tief,” meaning “deep, low,” with the suffix “-ling,” which means “offspring.” Thus, Tiefling loosely translates to “offspring from the lower flames.” Another theory suggests that the term may have derived from “Teufel,” the German word for “devil.”
This complex terminology was necessary as D&D back in the ’90s faced criticism for its depictions of devils and demons, suggestive art, and evil-aligned character conventions.
2. Originally Introduced In Planescape, 2E
Simply Known As One With Otherworldly Heritage
While Tieflings are now well-known as a playable race in Dungeons & Dragons, they were initially introduced as creatures in the Planescape Campaign Setting of Advanced Dungeons & Dragons 2E. Planescape is all about exploring the different planes of existence in the vast D&D multiverse. So, Tieflings are described as humans dwelling within the planes with a touch of otherworldly heritage, possibly from evil beings like demons or devils. Unlike half-fiends, Tieflings are further down the family tree, resulting in their more human-like appearance.
3. Appearance Initially Had A Lot Of Random Elements
Randomized Appearance Reflected Otherworldly Origins
In the beginning, Tieflings had a more random and diverse appearance. In 2E, Tieflings were described as having one defining feature that revealed their infernal heritage, such as horns. The Planeswalker’s Handbook even introduced a randomizer table for Dungeon Masters to generate other unique features for Tieflings, like red eyes, goat legs, and supernatural abilities. And let’s not forget the iconic Dungeon Magazine depiction of Tieflings, with horns for eyebrows and pink skin, which heavily influenced their appearances in later editions.
4. Have Had Various Creation Methods
May Be Created Through Reproduction, Magic
While Tieflings from Bael Turath have a strong connection with Asmodeus and the Nine Hells, not all Tieflings trace their lineage back to him. Tieflings can be created through various creative methods, adding a wealth of possibilities for character creation. Some humans can use powerful dark magic to transform into Tieflings, while extraplanar beings can assume humanoid form and interbreed with other races, producing Tiefling offspring. It’s even possible for Tieflings to breed with other races, resulting in the chance for subsequent generations to produce more Tieflings.
5. Non-Human Tieflings Did Exist
Tieflings May Exist For Dwarves, Elves, And Orcs
While humans are the most common basis for Tieflings, Tieflings can have ties to other prominent races as well. For example, the Fey’ri are the result of interbreeding between Sun Elves and demonic Tanar’ri. Another variant, the Tanarukk, are Orcs who have interbred with evil-aligned entities. And it doesn’t stop there! Tiefling variants also exist for Dwarves, Elves, Goblins, Halflings, Trolls, and Minotaurs, bestowing them with unique abilities and characteristics.
